Ramadan discussion, Andy, Freeland Lectures top upcoming events slate

Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center.
Al-TurkEmad Al-Turk, chairman and co-founder of the International Museum of Muslim Cultures and president of Waggoner Engineering, will present "Ramadan: A Month of Giving and Fasting," at noon on Monday, June 3, in classroom R354 (upper amphitheatre).
The presentation is sponsored by the UMMC Faith Forum, the Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

MoDr. Yin-Yuan Mo, UMMC professor of pharmacology and toxicology and scientific member of the UMMC Cancer Center and Research Institute's Molecular Biology Program, will present "Regulation of Cell Signaling by IncRNAs," at noon on Monday, June 3, in classroom N617A (6A).

AdebayoDr. Akeem A. Adebayo, UMMC preventive medicine fellow, will give the Department of Preventive Medicine presentation, "Overview of Mississippi Health Policy Fellowship," from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 5, on the first floor of the New Guyton library.

Friday, June 7
LundyDr. Douglas W. Lundy, an orthopaedic trauma surgeon, co-president of Resurgens Orthopaedics and president of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, will give the annual Freeland Lecture, "Third-world Medical Missions," at noon on Friday, June 7, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.
The presentation is part of the UMMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation's Alan E. Freeland Research Lecture Series and Resident Research Day. The full event, scheduled from 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m., also will include ortho intern talks and chief resident research presentations.

University Heart and Children's of Mississippi will host a free patient and family symposium, "1 in 100: Growing Up with Congenital Heart Disease," from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 8, in the Classroom Wing.
The event will include a discussion of the challenges of growing up with congenital heart disease and the important of lifelong care, a tour of the Heart Center, an echocardiogram demonstration, information about insurance coverage and interaction with heart doctors.

SandbergDr. Kathryn Sandberg, professor and assistant chair of research in the Department of Medicine and director of the Center for the Study of Sex Differences in Health, Aging and Disease at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., will give the UMMC Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology seminar, "Long-term Adverse Cardio-metabolic Consequences of Crash Diets and Other Causes of Periodic Inadequate Food Intake," at noon on Monday, June 10, in room 6A.

MosleyDr. Tom Mosley, The MIND Center chair and director, will present “New Research into the Causes of Alzheimer’s and Dementia” during the "Mind Matters" program from 6-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, in the second-floor conference rooms of the student union.
